Holiday Inn vs. White Christmas

I always get these two movies mixed up.  The biggest cause of confusion is the fact that the song White Christmas originated in the movie Holiday Inn.  Here are some ways to keep these movies separate in your head.

  • Holiday Inn has shows for all the holiday around the year starting and ending with Christmas while White Christmas has just one big show to save the lodge.
  • Holiday Inn is pre-WWII. White Christmas is post-war.
  • Holiday Inn is in Connecticut.  White Christmas is in Vermont.
  • Holiday Inn is in black and white.  White Christmas is in Technicolor.
  • Holiday Inn stars Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. White Christmas star Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye.
  • Holiday Inn includes the songs Happy Holidays and Easter Parade. White Christmas included the songs Sisters and Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep.
  • White Christmas includes the best rehearsal pan shot.
  • Holiday Inn turns into a movie of itself at the end.
  • Holiday Inn contains a now controversial blackface number.  This scene is edited from most broadcast versions due to sponsor’s demands.
